There are just too damn many movies. And not nearly enough good ones.

Yet the combination of inexpensive hi-def cameras, editing software that can be used on a home computer and, in particular, the Internet have created a democratization that means anyone can make a movie.

The problem is this: Not everyone should.

The people who champion these various endeavors will tell you that it allows the ordinary person to bypass the so-called gatekeepers and bring their work to the world at large.

At this point, however, it feels like we need more gatekeepers – and fewer gates.

And way fewer movies.

Quello della sovrabbondanza dei contenuti, e il conseguente abbassamento della loro qualità media, è un problema sul quale mi sono soffermato a riflettere più volte ultimamente.

Grazie ad un certo uso del web si è creata l’illusione che è bene fare qualunque cosa si è in grado di fare, a prescindere dalla vocazione, dal talento, e soprattutto dalle idee. Facciamo un video? Sì! Creiamo un’app? Sì! Apriamo un blog? Ma certo!

Io stesso mi sono trovato a prendere troppo sul serio attività secondarie come la scrittura su questo stesso blog, che invece deve necessariamente passare in secondo piano rispetto alla mia occupazione principale, il filmmaking.

Non commettiamo l’errore di produrre contenuti perché possiamo, perché abbiamo una connessione ad internet. Produciamo contenuti che abbiano valore[1], e se la loro qualità non è soddisfacente, cancelliamo tutto e ripartiamo da zero. Di roba mediocre ce n’è già troppa in giro.
